José Téllez, 49, was attacked by men armed with “blunt objects”. Its neighbors have created vigilance groups to combat new violent episodes.

A Chicago Latino man was brutally beaten to death by two people when he

was placing Christmas lights outside his home

in the Gage Park neighborhood this weekend, according to police and members of his family.

Investigators indicated that José Téllez, 49, was hit in the head around 6.30 in the afternoon by two individuals "armed with blunt objects" who arrived in a sedan car.

Téllez's relatives and neighbors detailed that the attack occurred when he was preparing the Christmas decorations.

"He was hanging up the Christmas decorations with his family, and suddenly they came," Silverio Nodal, a friend and neighbor of the family, told ABC7 News.

Kellie Bartoli, a police spokeswoman, said the investigators' report did not specify what type of blunt object the two men were armed with.

When asked

if Tellez knew his attackers or if there was any discussion

or interaction before the men began hitting him on the head, Bartoli said "detectives are still analyzing him," according to the Chicago Tribune newspaper.
