Ganz: "There is no doubt that Iran is a problem - and Israel is preparing its capabilities" (Walla system!)

White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan will arrive in Israel next Wednesday for a series of meetings on the Iranian nuclear issue.

This is against the background of Israel's fears of negotiations on a return to the nuclear agreement that is taking place in Vienna, three senior Israeli officials said tonight (Monday).

Sullivan is expected to meet with Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, Defense Minister Bnei Gantz and Foreign Minister Yair Lapid And will meet with Palestinian Authority Chairman Abu Mazen.

The White House declined to comment.

Defense Secretary Benny Gantz returned today from a visit to the United States, during which he met with his American counterpart Lloyd Austin and Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.

Gantz clarified in his talks that he instructed the IDF to prepare a plan for a military attack on Iran's nuclear facilities.

Senior Israeli officials said Gantz got the impression that the Americans were more willing than ever to discuss with Israel issues related to preparing for military action against Iran.

On the eve of Ganz's visit, the US Department of Defense leaked to Reuters that the United States was willing to hold joint exercises with Israel that are engaged in military action against Iran's nuclear facilities.

Sullivan arrives in Israel after the US Department of Defense presented him with updated plans for possible military action against Iran's nuclear facilities at the end of October.

The Americans also decided to leak this detail to the media on the eve of Ganz's visit.

Israeli officials have said they believe the background to the leak is a desire to reassure Israel on the one hand and put pressure on Iran in nuclear talks on the other.

Biden's national security adviser, during Obama's tenure, served as one of the members of the small team that held the secret talks with Iran in the Sultanate of Oman that led to the signing of the 2013 Geneva Interim Agreement. Sullivan then thought that the interim agreement that froze Iran's uranium enrichment in exchange for easing some of the sanctions was a good solution to the Iranian nuclear crisis.

So even these days, Sullivan is one of the proponents within the US administration of the approach that if it is not possible to return to full implementation of the nuclear deal, the United States will try to reach an interim agreement with Iran that will freeze uranium enrichment to 60% in exchange for some sanctions.

Sullivan raised this idea in general in conversations he had a few weeks ago with his Israeli counterpart, Eyal Hulta.

Israel has expressed opposition to such a move and since the issue first came up in talks with the Americans, it has continued to cause concern in Jerusalem.

Foreign Minister Yair Lapid told his American counterpart in Linken in the latest phone call between them on Friday that an interim agreement of this kind would be a reward for the Iranians.
