Romy Schneider as Sissi - for many this belongs in the run-up to Christmas like the Advent wreath and poinsettia.

New film adaptations of the life of Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary are now starting on TV, in the cinema and on streaming portals.

We introduce them to you.

It all starts with the masturbation scene.

Well, that's a good way to cause a stir.

The future Empress of Austria-Hungary lies in her youth bed and satisfies herself. Now RTL + is showing the first two episodes of the RTL six-part “Sisi”, and from December 28th the miniseries can be seen on free TV on RTL.

It is just one of several film adaptations of the life story of the fascinating personality Elisabeth (1837-1898) that will be shown on streaming portals, on television and in the cinema over the next few months.

Here we introduce them to you.

"Corsage": A movie about Sisi

If Instagram and Co. had already existed in her time - Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary would have been one of the influencers in terms of fashion and sport.

Over-ambitious, this unhappy woman first went horse riding, then after an accident fencing and hiking at the highest level.

In Austria, a film was made under the direction of Marie Kreutzer, which deals with the time in Elisabeth's life when her youthful beauty slowly faded - and which tells how she did everything possible to counteract physical decline.

Vicky Krieps will play the leading role in "Corsage" - as the telling title is.

Theatrical release: expected in 2022.

“Sisi”: The modern Elisabeth goes into series production on RTL and RTL +

Ever since the successful musical "Elisabeth" by Michael Kunze, which premiered in Vienna in 1992, even the biggest fans of Ernst Marischka's "Sissi" films have known that Romy Schneider was only a kitschy version of the real Elisabeth.

So that this is clear from the start, the title of the six-part is the now

goes online on RTL +, not only “Sisi” (with an “s”, as Elisabeth actually wrote herself), but also starts with a shock, as described above. And so it continues. If the young Elisabeth (Dominique Devenport) looks at the floor plan of the imperial palace with her sister Helene (Pauline Rénevier), then she first wants to know what is happening in the bedroom. And Helene explains it to her with very clear Kamasutra cards from her father's desk. The maid has a wooden dildo in her luggage, and otherwise this really has nothing to do with the prudish Marischka films of the 1950s. Unfortunately, the makers exaggerate the emphasis on the physical. The goal is clear: sex sells. Does it work?

"The Empress"

Netflix, too, discovered its interest in the Empress of Austria-Hungary 65 years after the second part of the classic "Sissi" film was released.

Filming for "The Empress" is currently in progress.

It should be about the first years of the Empress at the Viennese court.

Franz's brother Maximilian, who has taken a liking to the beautiful Elisabeth, causes chaos in love.

The Netflix launch is not yet known.

As with "The Crown"?

Amy Jenkins knows how to put a royal family in the right light: She is part of the team in the hit series "The Crown".

And is now supposed to be responsible as the scriptwriter and creative head of another project dedicated to Sisi.

An American series with an as yet unknown title aims to focus on the two Elisabeth novels by Allison Pataki, which illuminate several decades of the Empress's love and political life.

Start: still unknown.
