Tales and stories from the Syrian reality lived during the terrorist war waged against Syria were written by their owners with their pens to be a document of history proving the reality of the suffering experienced by the people of villages and towns that suffered from siege and war to be documented by the Watan Document Foundation within its archives.

Nine tales won the award for the best short realistic tale in the “This is my story” competition for the year 2021 in a celebration held by the Foundation at Al-Assad Library this evening, where hundreds of Syrian stories participated in the competition, which was evaluated by a specialized jury.

The jury divided the prizes into three age groups, as the golden prize was won by Nibal in the name of Fatima from Lattakia, while the silver prize went to Aya Agha Al-Ayoub from Raqqa governorate, while the bronze prize went to Wiam Muhammad Al-Dakhil from Al-Hasakah.

As for the second age category, the golden award went to Osama Al-Haddad from Tartous Governorate, the silver went to Hatem Ismail Suleiman from Hama Governorate, and the bronze award to Diana Khader Al-Salama from Homs Governorate.

In the prizes for the third age category, the gold went to Al-Waleed Khaled Al-Mufleh from Daraa, the silver went to Mayada Shaiban from Lattakia, and the bronze by Amer Al-Mardini from Damascus.

Muhammad Shahoud, who saved the entire real estate records in the city of Homs, Rastan and Palmyra from the clutches of terrorism, was honored. The ceremony included the screening of an introductory film on the work of the Watan Document Foundation and the presentation of a film material from oral documentation interviews, in addition to honoring the arbitrators, who are writer and media person Hassan M Youssef, Dr. Malik Sukour, Dr. Amal Dakkak and Dr. Insaf Hamad.

In her speech, Dr. Buthaina Shaaban, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Watan Document Foundation, confirmed that the participating stories stem from people's experiences, suffering, dreams, their unlimited ability to give, the manifestations of their patience and determination, the broadening of their spontaneous and cognitive horizons, and the spread of their hopes despite all the difficulties, harsh days and enormous challenges.

Dr. Shaaban added that the history of the war on Syria is the history of the activities of a homeland in the darkest conditions and in all sectors and specializations and on every part of the dear Syrian land, pointing out that the document of a homeland records a social history written by the people of Syria in all their regions and with all their segments and specializations to be a true tributary to the official history that neglected these treasures in the past.

Dr. Shaaban pointed out that the next project will be an interactive map for every city, town and neighborhood in Syria so that each address will be available through this map with all its history, culture, heritage, customs and food, and to be available on the Internet and registered internationally.

The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Local Administration, Eng. Hussein Makhlouf, Minister of Culture, Dr. Lubana Mushouh, Minister of Information, Dr. Boutros Al-Hallaq, Dr. Mahdi Dakhlallah, a member of the Central Command of the Arab Socialist Baath Party, the Governor of Damascus, Engineer Adel Al-Olabi, and a number of ambassadors and representatives of diplomatic missions in Damascus.

The Watan Document, which launched the competition in 2019, is a non-governmental, non-profit research institution established on June 9, 2016 concerned with preserving national memory and contributing to writing contemporary Syrian history in Syrian hands according to the approach of oral history and working to build an archive of documented testimonies that constitute a reference database on Syria and the Arab world To build a nucleus of a national archive that forms part of the history process and the historical process.
