(CNN) -

Instagram director Adam Mosseri testified last week before a Senate subcommittee, where lawmakers questioned the app's impact on the mental health of younger users.

During his testimony, Mosseri said that Instagram plans to bring back a version of its news feed that would give users the option of chronologically sorting the content they see within the platform, rather than ranking it based on the algorithm.

The chronological order could address concerns about how algorithms push users into endless holes of harmful information.

The company has been working on the feature "for months" and plans to roll out in the first quarter of next year, Mosseri said.

Mosseri also recognized the need for updated regulations to keep people safe online, as well as the need for more tools for parents and users on the platform.

"Specifically, we believe there should be an industry body that determines best practices" for social media companies to verify the ages of users, cater to different age groups and provide parental controls, he said, adding that the body "It should receive information from civil society, parents and regulators."

Mosseri declined to explicitly commit to the suggestions for an "independent" body that is not run by some of the tech industry giants, but agreed that it is important that regulatory standards apply to social media when deals with young people.

Mosseri is the highest-profile figure at Meta, the company formerly known as Facebook, testifying before members of Congress since Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen leaked hundreds of internal documents.

Some of those documents showed that the company knew how Instagram can harm mental health and body image, especially among teenage girls.
