"For Peace in the World": The man who waved his hand 48 years ago - and has not lowered since

Amar Bahrati was a fairly standard guy who worked as a bank clerk until one day he had a revelation and he decided to dedicate his life to El Shiva.

He waved his hand in the air in protest against wars - and has not lowered it for almost 50 years - and is not sure he is already capable of lowering it at all

Have you ever tried to test how long in a row you are able to hold your hand up? After two minutes or a roof for three minutes the hand will start to hurt you and you will have to lower it. That is why the act of Amar Bahrati the Indian is impressive and astonishing - he has been holding his hand raised in the air for more than 48 years (!). In 1973 Bahrati worked as a clerk at a local bank in India. He married, had three children and led a routine life, until suddenly he decided to abandon everything in order to dedicate his life to the god Shiva, one of the central gods in Hinduism, responsible for the destruction and re-creation of the world.

He said one day he had a revelation that came to him out of nowhere that made him choose to leave his family, work and friends to fulfill his religious vocation.

Bahrati decided to dedicate the rest of his life to Shiva and become a Sadhu monk.

Sadhu give up in the name of belief in their home and family, their livelihood, their social status and also in accepted norms of behavior, opinions and beliefs.

At first he still felt the temptation to do things he was not allowed to do as a monk, so he felt he needed to do something more drastic to really establish his religious choice.

So in 1973 he chose to raise his hand and hold it in the air until the end of his life, to show his faith and appreciation for Shiva.

Since then his arm has been raised in the air in an impressive display of faith.

Bahrati soon became quite popular around the world and thousands were inspired by his gesture.

When asked why he raises his hand, he always replies that this gesture is a protest against wars and an expression of support for world peace, as well as a way to show the respect he has for Shiva.

"I do not ask for much. Why are we fighting among ourselves? Why is there so much hatred between us? I want all Indians to live in peace and brotherhood. I want the whole world to live in peace," he said in a rare interview he gave in the past.

So how does he manage to raise his hand for so long?

At first it really hurt him, but after two years the anguish stopped because he just lost the feeling in his arm, which became degenerate.

Now, even if he wanted to lower his hand, he probably would not be able to do so without prior preparation, because of the nerve damage and loss of circulation in the blood.

Doctors estimate that his muscles are so degenerate that lowering his arm will probably cause him permanent nerve damage in the arm - so it is better for him to stay in this position.

Over the years he became a guru and pilgrimage hotspot for many believers, with his gesture inspiring many others to become sadhu (Hindu monks) and keep their hands high in the air for long periods of time, but no one could even come close to the climax of Bahrati, who still holds his hand high and does not plan Download it soon.
