Former police officers Tou Thao and J. Alexander Kueng are also charged in connection with an alleged failure to intervene in Chauvin's excessive use of force, according to the federal indictment.

The indictment noted that "the defendants saw George Floyd lying on the ground in clear need of medical attention. And they deliberately failed to help Floyd, acting with deliberate disregard for a substantial risk of harm to Floyd." .

In April, Chauvin was found guilty of unintentional manslaughter in the commission of a felony, unintentional manslaughter with disregard for life, and accidental manslaughter.

He was sentenced to 22 and a half years in state prison.

Under Minnesota law, Chauvin will have to serve two-thirds of his sentence, or 15 years, and will be eligible for supervised release for the remaining seven and a half years.

Furthermore, Thao, Kueng and Lane face charges of aiding and abetting accidental homicide and aiding and inciting unintentional manslaughter in the commission of a felony in Floyd's death.

They have pleaded not guilty.

His trial is currently scheduled for March 2022.
