In Mexico, the population seems to be satisfied with their life ... at least in general.

People in the country gave an average rating of 8.45 (on a scale of 10) to satisfaction with their life in general, according to data from the country's National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

As can be seen in the results of the National Self-Reported Well-being Survey (ENBIARE) 2021 of Inegi, this qualification was granted by people of 18 years or more, literate and Spanish speakers, so it can be inferred that this measurement does not contemplate minors, people who only speak indigenous languages, among others.

The specific question that Inegi asked at ENBIARE 2021 was the following: "Could you tell me, on that scale from 0 to 10, how satisfied are you currently with your life?", Where as a result at the national level an average of 8.45 (8.37 was the grade given by women and 8.53 by men, according to the data).

Life satisfaction at the state level and insecurity in Mexico

At the state level, none of the Mexican entities falls below 8 in terms of life satisfaction in general: Nuevo León (in the north of the country) is the first place with 8.79 and Mexico City (national capital) occupies the last position with an average grade of 8.15.

Regarding life satisfaction in specific aspects, Mexicans give the worst score to citizen security: 6.58 on a scale of 10, with women giving a worse score than men.

The foregoing is not a minor detail, as it is an obvious sign of the persistent violence against women in the country.

Andrés Manuel López Obrador, president of Mexico, recognized in his third government report that femicide is one of the three crimes that has grown in his administration (13% more cases), although he pointed out that "possibly, I reiterate, before it was not classified like now".

  • Thousands of women take to the streets in the 25N to protest against the increase in gender violence

The other two crimes that have grown in the current government, López Obrador added, are extortion (28% more in the time this administration has been in place) and robbery of individual public transport (it has grown 12%).

Much mistrust in society

Although the average rating for life satisfaction is relatively high at the national level, there are details that reveal strong lights and shadows.

For example, the distrust that people have towards other social agents with whom they live on a daily basis.

ENBIARE 2021 considered 12 social agents to measure the level of trust of people in Mexico.

The average trust they had was asked on a scale from 0 to 10. Of the total number of social agents, 10 were "failed" by people, which indicates a high level of mistrust, as shown below:

  • National Guard: Average rating of 5.63 on a scale of 10.

  • Most people: 5.30

  • Media: 5.02

  • Courts and Tribunals: 4.96

  • Public Ministry and Attorney Generals: 4.74

  • Chamber of Deputies and Senators: 4.42

  • State Police: 4.37

  • Public officials: 3.99

  • Municipal Police: 3.87

  • Political parties: 3.53

The only social agents who received an average rating that could be considered "passing" were two: acquaintances (7.62) and the Army and Navy (6.47).
