The quantities of the tobacco crop marketed by the General Tobacco Corporation in the coastal region for the current season have reached 700,000 kg of the “Shakk al-Banat” variety, while the final estimates of production in the coastal region are about 2 million kg for this season.
Engineer Ayman Qara Falah, Director of Agriculture and Scientific Research at the General Tobacco Corporation and Chairman of the Supervising Committee on Tobacco Purchase for the year 2021-2022, stated in a statement to SANA Economic Bulletin that the tobacco purchase operations that started since the beginning of October are continuing through the committees formed for this purpose, which handle the operations of Purchasing and transporting the crop from the different production areas in order to facilitate the farmers, through the corporation’s cars to its stores, indicating that the purchase of the tobacco crop for other varieties from farmers continues in the people of “Lattakia-Al-Haffah-Qardaha-Jableh-Banias-Tartous” after directing specialized committees to identify and classify tobacco according to its quality.
Qara Falah pointed out that production during the current year is low compared to last year, whether in terms of quantity or quality due to the drought wave and the lack of rain during the planting season, indicating that the prices of products vary according to its quality and classification. For the Tenbak Extra brand, while the price of the premium grade varieties was set at 5300 Syrian pounds per kilo for the Basma type, 4500 pounds for the Prilep and Katerini variety, 3400 pounds for the Burly variety, and 3900 pounds for the Virginia variety.
