After two summers, it's already over: the host couple Izabella and Florian Spiegelberger stop at the Landgasthof Duchess Anna at the Schwaiganger Stud - they lack a sustainable perspective.

The restaurant will remain closed until further notice.

- Izabella Spiegelberger doesn't talk about the bush for long: "We can't do it anymore." In 2020, after the real estate Free State of Bavaria had been looking for a new tenant for the property over many months, the restaurateur and her husband Florian Spiegelberger had the Landgasthof Duchess Anna Took over at the Schwaiganger State Stud - and enthusiastically declared: “I don't want to leave here.” The two of them endured two seasons, only to realize now: It is no longer possible. The decision was made during a three-week vacation in November, when the couple realized how much their physical reserves had been used up and had to admit that they couldn't go on like this. Added to this was "the fear of what is still to come", also with a view to the corona imponderables. So now it is clear: The Spiegelbergers,self-employed for 14 years, cannot and do not want to shoulder the burden any further. Your vacation is long over, but you won't open the country inn again.

Duchess Anna: start in the middle of the pandemic

Your start in Schwaiganger with the opening in May 2020 fell at an extremely difficult time - in the middle of the pandemic with its lockdowns. In between, the landlords, who had previously leased the Altenauer Dorfwirt, shouldered the operation of the country inn for two summer seasons almost exclusively with the help of the family. Both of them felt that they were no longer able to cope with the requirements that the stud justifiably made, which the economy “also has for events”, as Izabella Spiegelberger emphasizes. “We cannot do this without staff.” And good employees, who would have been urgently needed in the summer, have been very difficult to find in the catering industry, and not just since the outbreak of the pandemic. Corona caused a further exacerbation - also with regard to the economic situation of the host couple, who had to fall back on money,that it had set aside earlier. Izabella Spiegelberger asked herself the question of meaning: What good would it be to plow through in the summer - this had gone well in both years - and to attack reserves in the winter? "We are working to ensure that we get through in old age to some extent." She no longer believes that Corona, with all its restrictions, will be over in March 2022. It is infinitely sad to pass such an object into other hands, "but for us it is the best". She is grateful that the landlord showed understanding for her situation and shows how well the interpersonal relationships in the stud ("It's nice here and great") fit - from the employees to the head of the horse center, Cornelia Back.to plow through in the summer - this went well in both years - and to attack reserves in the winter? Restaurant remains "closed until further notice"

How things will go on with Duchess Anna is unclear.

"We have to coordinate that internally first," says Manfred Lanz, administrative director of the main and state stud.

One thing is clear: "The restaurant will remain closed until further notice."

Spiegelbergers resort to food trucks and are looking for a small daytime restaurant

The lease is to be terminated.

The Spiegelbergers, who live in Altenau, are currently busy clearing out in Schwaiganger;

there is still no safe plan B.

In January, the couple first want to activate the food truck with catering that they bought in the summer.

The Spiegelbergers, who want to offer Bavarian-American cuisine, are still looking for parking spaces.

In addition, the couple keeps their eyes open for a small day bar in the region that they can operate from Monday to Friday.

It thinks it is on the right track.

Saying goodbye to Schwaiganger, says Izabella Spiegelberger, “doesn't feel wrong”.
