Now there is also a prick for the little ones: The children's vaccination center has started operations in the Gasteig.

Children between five and eleven years of age can be vaccinated there with a specially dosed vaccine from Biontech.

A lion waves in a friendly manner, an elephant merrily splashes water with its trunk and a fox wags its tail: on the 16 cabins in the children's vaccination center in Gasteig, colorful animal images take away the fear of pricking children. "We have tried to make everything very child-friendly," said health officer Beatrix Zurek yesterday at the start of child vaccinations in Munich. “We're trying to make vaccination an event.” Just in time for the opening of the center at 9 o'clock, the first people willing to be vaccinated were on site.

The city received 360,000 doses of the Biontech vaccine for children between the ages of five and eleven. Initially, around 540 appointments per day are activated for the age group in the Gasteig, after a test phase this could be increased to up to 800 appointments. All dates are booked up until December 23rd. "After Christmas there are still vacancies," said the vaccination plant manager Simon Wittke. Dates can be booked until the end of January. Wittke is happy with the start: “The atmosphere is good, it's coming and going.” Around 50 employees, including ten paediatricians and ten medical assistants, ensure that everything runs smoothly.

Paramedic Michaela Hannig is also there.

She wears a teddy smock and a Christmas mask.

“You have to involve the children,” she explained.

The 39-year-old used to work as a kindergarten teacher and knows all the tricks to calm the children down: "You are very brave."

City plans mobile offers at schools

Johanna and Luisa Bauer, both ten years old, were also in a good mood.

"We have been vaccinated several times, so we are not afraid of the corona vaccination," they say.

“But it's exciting.” They came with their father.

“Of course, we first waited to see how the child vaccinations went in order to be able to assess the risks and side effects,” explains Benjamin Bauer.

"But now that this has worked well in Israel and the US, we have few concerns."

Mayor Verena Dietl promoted child vaccinations: "We want to encourage all families and children to get vaccinated," she said. Mobile offers at elementary and special schools are also planned from mid / end of January.

So far, around 8090 children between the ages of six and ten in Munich have been infected with Corona.

According to the figures from the Robert Koch Institute (source: SurvStat @ RKI 2.0, https://survstat.rki.de, query date: December 16, 2021) the incidence in the week from November 29 to December 5 was five up to under ten year olds at 890.95.

For ten to under 15 year olds it was 877.16.

.

But here, too, the number of infections is on the decline.

In the previous week, the incidence was 922.72 in the younger and 1010.42 in the older children and adolescents.

After all: In the Munich children's clinics, the number of occupied beds in which small Covid 19 patients are treated is still low.

This is how the registration for vaccination works

Parents who want their children to be vaccinated must register at www.impfzentren.bayern.

An appointment can be made at www.wir-impfen-muenchen.de.

Parents registered in the Bavarian vaccination portal can also be vaccinated in the Gasteig, provided that the vaccine (Biontech or Moderna) is available.

The center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5.45 p.m.
