Due to the corona pandemic, the jungle camp was relocated to South Africa, followed by the discovery of Omikron.

It is now clear what will become of the show.

Cologne - In a few weeks the time has come: Sonja Zietlow can scream into the jungle again.

Because while the jungle camp was relocated to Cologne this year, in 2022 the stars and starlets of German television should camp again in the wilderness in proper style.

In order to avoid a short-term cancellation of the shoot, the production location was changed from Australia to South Africa.

A mistake?

Finally, at the end of November, the virus variant Omikron was discovered in the newly chosen district of South Africa and fans of the show immediately feared it would end.

Now RTL * entertainment director Markus Küttner spoke about the future of "I'm a star - get me out of here".

Jungle camp 2022 in South Africa: Omikron worries fans

Omikron keeps the country in suspense. Since the variant was discovered a few weeks ago, the government has been trying to stop the spread. Britain and Germany restricted air traffic to South Africa and designated the country as a virus variant area. Problematic for many travelers as well as for RTL, because for the first time the jungle camp should no longer be filmed in Australia, but in South Africa. The alternative was clear early on after the last edition of the show had to be canceled at short notice due to Corona. A replacement show was offered as consolation, but many fans were disappointed with "I'm a Star - The Great Jungle Show". To get around this, the filming location was relocated to Swadini National Park on the Blyde River Canon in South Africa. Now the audience must fear again.

RTL is optimistic: The jungle camp will take place

RTL entertainment director Markus Küttner gives the all-clear.

In an interview with the industry service

DWDL.de he

showed himself

"Optimistic that we can go on air with 'Ich bin ein Star' in January as planned".

Nevertheless, the situation is taken very seriously and the development of the new virus variant is closely followed.

The aim is to allow the production of the jungle camp to take place in 2022 *, because “concepts have already been developed with experts in order to be able to produce safely,” says Küttner.

He emphasizes that entertainment is very important in such frightening times, which is why RTL will try to "continue to implement the big shows" and to be able to "conjure up the audience with the jungle show exoticism and sun in the living room".

Despite the optimism of the entertainment chief, some fans of the show are skeptical and point out the danger for the cast and crew.

"I'm a star - get me out of here" crew will "live in a bubble"

Under no circumstances do you want to shoot at the expense of the crew and the cast.

The health of those involved will always have priority, assures Markus Küttner.

The German and South African production teams would “live and work in a bubble” on site.

RTL also relies on the double vaccination, the boosting is also a good protection in a virus variant area.

Regular tests are also carried out, so that Küttner assumes that everyone is very safe.

"I could imagine that we are safer with jungle production in South Africa than in some offices in Germany," said Küttner in an interview.

Jungle camp boss Küttner promises: "It will be really great"

The fans should look forward to the new location, because the jungle camp boss promises exciting innovations. “There will be a completely new look here,” he says happily. However, he sees a disadvantage in the lack of time difference. While the moderation duo Sonja Zietlow and Daniel Hartwich in Australia always ran the show in the light, they now have to stand in the dark. “South Africa is only one hour ahead in winter, Queensland in Australia nine hours. This results in some changes in the work processes, ”explains Küttner. Nevertheless, he is certain: "It will be really great". The first candidates have already been announced, and ex-Bachelor Paul Janke will also face the tasks of the jungle *. There are still rumors about the participation of "Bauer sucht Frau" star Iris Abel.

Should the situation change drastically, RTL will have to react.

There is no alternative for South Africa, so a cancellation would be inevitable.
