Those who travel often with Deutsche Bahn have to be prepared for a few changes in 2022.

One service is even completely discontinued.

Traveling by train in Germany is still not really an attractive alternative to flying or taking a car on most routes.

However, Deutsche Bahn wants to change that in the coming years and is therefore pursuing ambitious plans.

First there is a fare increase - and a service is to be canceled in 2022.

All changes at a glance.

Deutsche Bahn 2022: That will change for travelers

  • Buying tickets on the train

: From 2022 it will no longer be possible to buy a paper ticket from the conductor after boarding. A ticket can then only be booked online via the app or the train website - and only up to ten minutes after departure. There is an exception for the severely disabled. Until now, this option was still available for long-distance travelers when traveling on the ICE or Intercity for an on-board surcharge of 17 euros.

  • Fare increase

: Even before the turn of the year, on December 12th, Deutsche Bahn increased its

fares by an average of 1.9 percent

    .

The flex price and the prices for route season tickets were 2.9 percent more expensive.

The price of BahnCards 25, 50 and 100 has also increased by 2.9 percent.

The saver prices and super saver prices are still available from 17.90 euros and 21.50 euros, respectively.

  • 30 new ICE trains

: Deutsche Bahn wants to offer travelers even more seats from 2022. A total of 30 new high-speed trains will provide

    an additional 13,000 seats

    - which in turn will allow the entire DB long-distance fleet to grow by 20 percent. The trains will initially be used on the lines between North Rhine-Westphalia and Munich.

  • New sprinter connections

: The DB 2022 timetable reveals new sprinter connections on "eight of the ten strongest domestic German flight routes," as the company says.

The aim is to make rail travel an environmentally friendly and fast alternative to air travel.

A Sprinter drives three times a day in each direction between Cologne and Berlin without stopping in under four hours.

On the Düsseldorf-Cologne-Munich route, travelers should be up to 30 minutes faster.

In addition, there should be new evening sprinters between Berlin and Munich.
