DECRYPTION - This method of transforming organic matter into energy threatens in particular water and livestock.


On paper, anaerobic digestion is a great idea. This transformation of organic materials, such as agricultural livestock effluents to produce gas and electricity, has many advantages.

"It responds to a triple challenge: environmental protection, waste management and energy policy"

, underlines a recent senatorial mission, chaired by Pierre Cuypers (LR) with environmental rapporteur Daniel Salmon (Solidarity and Territories). For the past ten years, this source of energy has thus experienced strong growth, as evidenced by the projects that have flourished in the French countryside, sometimes despite the hostility of the local populations.

There are in France, according to this document,

"1,075 installations at the end of 2020, of which 214 inject biomethane into natural gas networks",

or the equivalent of 0.5% of the French consumption of natural gas.
