Shortly before the holidays, low temperatures are expected in Germany.
A weather expert therefore sees good chances for a white Christmas this year.
Munich - Christmas is getting closer and closer, only a few days until Christmas Eve.
Before the festival, the annual question about the weather arises.
Many people want snow over the holidays - even some snow grouches.
But what are the prognoses for this year?
What are the chances of a white Christmas in 2021?
White Christmas 2021?
DWD clouded hopes for snow
A reliable snow forecast is currently not possible.
Christmas is still too far away for that.
The German Weather Service (DWD) had already commented on the general chances of a white Christmas a few days ago - with sobering news for snow fans.
Climate change is reducing the prospect of this in many regions of Germany.
Statistically speaking, most people in this country can only look forward to snow on the three public holidays every ten years.
Concrete forecasts for the respective year are only possible a few days before Christmas.
White Christmas 2021?
Weather expert: "The cold is safe"
Meteorologist Jan Schenk from
The Weather Channel
is cautiously optimistic about his snow forecast for Christmas.
Two things are needed for a white Christmas, explains the expert: cold and snow.
As for the first factor, things are looking very good this year.
"It will be very cold," said Schenk.
For the weekend before the fourth Advent (December 19), he predicts a drop in temperature.
The Azores high over the British Isles is getting stronger.
This brings cold air to Germany and Central Europe, explains the meteorologist.
Russian cold air could also bring about even lower temperatures.
“The cold is safe,” says Schenk.

Meteorologist Schenk: "The best chance for a white Christmas in over ten years"
So the first part for a white Christmas is secured.
The situation is different with snow - the forecasts are uncertain, says the weather expert.
But: "It is the case that we have the best chance of a white Christmas in over ten years," Schenk agrees hopefully.
It currently looks like a bit of snow will be possible in southern and eastern Germany as well as over the low mountain ranges on December 24th.
According to the forecasts, it should continue to snow over the holidays.
“At the end of Christmas there will be a bit of snow everywhere,” explains Schenk.
But the meteorologist makes it clear: "The snow forecast will keep changing over the next few days."
Weather expert Dominik Jung also sees a great unknown when it comes to the white Christmas 2021.
A “concrete high” is currently setting itself above Bavaria.
