In March 2018, masked strangers in Haan near Düsseldorf matched manager Bernhard Günther to pour acid over his head.

Now the investigators have apparently achieved a breakthrough.

Wuppertal / Limburg - More than three and a half years after the acid attack on energy manager Bernhard Günther in Haan near Düsseldorf, the investigators arrested a suspect.

The Wuppertal public prosecutor announced on Friday.

A DNA trace secured at the crime scene charged the 41-year-old, who was arrested in the Belgian province of Limburg.

He is under urgent suspicion.

A European arrest warrant had been issued against him.

A short-term delivery is intended.

Two strangers attacked Günther on March 4, 2018 after jogging near his home in Haan near Düsseldorf and poured highly concentrated acid over him.

Four suspects in total

In October 2019, a man was arrested in Cologne in connection with the crime.

The now 34-year-old had to be released again.

After that, evidence of the second suspect from Belgium had accumulated.

A total of four suspects are being investigated.

Günther suffered serious injuries.

At the time of the crime, he was chief financial officer of the RWE subsidiary Innogy, which was later taken over by Eon.

He has since left the company.

Innogy offered a reward of 100,000 euros.

In an interview, Günther was convinced that the motive behind the act was in the “professional environment”.

A few days after the attack on Günther, it became known that the RWE subsidiary Innogy was to be broken up and parts of the competitor Eon were to be taken over.
