A big step for a long distance: The alpine bus is to create a continuous connection from Murnau to Rosenheim with two coordinated lines.

From Munich, it's not just the major roads that spread out into the region in a star shape.

The main connecting lines for local public transport - be it train, S-Bahn or Bayerische Regiobahn (BRB) - follow this principle.

What is missing, however, are the cross-connections between these branches.

This gap is now to be closed by the Alpenbus, which is to connect the large towns between Murnau in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district and Rosenheim in two coordinated express lines. Miesbach has given its approval as one of a total of five districts involved. The vote in the district council, which met on Wednesday in the Seeforum in Rottach-Egern, was unanimous.

Transport expert Peter Schiffmann from the District Office emphasized the size of this step to the district councilors: "It is remarkable that the districts are willing to spend so much money." The Miesbach district is due to its central location and high mileage expected costs of EUR 878,000 per year.

The cost range is between 830,000 and 926,000 euros - without funding.

After deducting the funding from the Free State of Bavaria, which should now be 50 percent of the deficit in the fourth year from the beginning of 65, the average is around 350 200 euros per year.

According to Schiffmann, fare receipts are not yet taken into account in the estimates.

Estimated conservatively, the cost recovery in the first year of operation is ten to 15 percent and up to 25 percent from the fourth year of operation.

However, a better income situation is conceivable on routes between Bad Tölz and Gmund and Rosenheim and Gmund that are interesting for tourists.

Route divided into two sections

The line is planned in two sections.

The west branch of the alpine bus extends from Murnau via Penzberg to Bad Tölz.

The east branch leads from Bad Tölz via Waakirchen, Gmund, the Oedberglifte and Agatharied to Miesbach and on to Rosenheim.

In addition, there are express trips every two hours on weekdays from Tölz via Greiling and Reichersbeuern to Miesbach.

At the weekend, the Tegernsee is connected every hour.

Three vehicles are required for the west branch and six for the east branch with the various loops.

The costs for each of the districts involved are calculated on the basis of the kilometers driven.

A continuous 60-minute cycle is planned throughout the day.

Long lead time

Although this bus route represents a major step, because it spans the district, there were still a few desires. Elisabeth Janner (Greens) regretted that the last bus should leave at 8 p.m. Schiffmann explained this by stating that the basic orientation was commuter and commuting. The astonishment of Paul Fertl (SPD) that one would have to start with the preparations in spring 2022 and then probably not be able to start until June 2024, could understand Schiffmann. However, he referred to public procurement law and the opportunity for transport companies that first have to align their capacities accordingly.

The Alpenbus will have its own "Alpenbus tariff", which is based very much on the MVV tariff in terms of tariff regulations and tariff structure.

This should avoid the discussion about the recognition of specific MVV tariffs.

A future transition from the Alpenbus tariff to the MVV tariff will thus be made easier when you plan to join the MVV.
