It was his wife who announced his death on Facebook.
Political scientist, co-founder of the Republican Spring movement and author of numerous books on identity and cultural insecurity, Laurent Bouvet died in Paris this Saturday at the age of 53.
He had publicly reported on his degenerative disease, Charcot's disease, on Facebook late last month.
“In the summer of 2019, I was diagnosed with a neurodegenerative disease called ALS, more commonly known as Charcot's disease.
This disease quickly deprived me of the use of my limbs and of speech, ”he explained at the time.
“I have always refused to mention it publicly, especially here, because I did not want the disease to define me.
If I mention it today, it is because I am leaving Facebook and my public speaking ceases with this departure, ”he had further clarified.
"I am a universal humanist"
This leftist thinker was one of the few voices in his camp openly engaged in the fight against "political Islam".
This staunch defender of secularism was often accused of “republican identity” speech.
But the latter refuted this thesis.
"I am in no way an identity, quite the contrary, I am a universalist humanist who believes deeply in indeterminacy, in the benefits of interbreeding and emancipation", he confided to Point on the occasion of a final interview.
The far right, never!

Marlène Schiappa paid tribute to him this Saturday evening in a tweet.
“Our friend Laurent Bouvet was much more than an intellectual, great defender of the republican left.
Words are lacking today to express his erudition, his humor, his generosity, ”she wrote.
Huge sadness.
Our friend Laurent Bouvet was much more than an intellectual, great defender of the republican left.
Words fail today to express his erudition, his humor, his generosity.
Thoughts of Astrid and their daughters;
as well as to his relatives.
We loved him.
