A former official investigated on suspicion of protecting fuel theft at the state-owned Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) was arrested this Friday in Canada, fulfilling a deportation request from the Mexican authorities, the Attorney General's Office reported in a statement of this country (FGR).
The detainee, who was only identified in the document as Eduardo "L", is the former deputy director of Strategic Safeguarding of the entity, Eduardo León Trauwitz, confirmed a source from the Prosecutor's Office to CNN this Friday.
According to the statement, the accused faces a judicial process in Mexico for allegedly being "responsible as the protector of the huachicol (oil theft) within PEMEX."
It was added that the accused and "a group of accomplices" allegedly "covered up and protected" the theft of hydrocarbons in the distribution networks of the state oil company.
According to the FGR, Mexico requested his extradition to Canada in November 2019.

Until this Friday, it was unknown which Canadian agency had carried out the arrest of León and none had made a public statement.
CNN is trying to contact the Canadian embassy in Mexico for more details.
CNN is also trying to contact León's lawyers for comment on his arrest.
