The first vaccination campaign for children took place on the fourth Sunday in Advent at the Freising Vaccination Center - and there was great interest.

- Many Freising parents have been longing for the fourth Advent for a long time, but not exclusively for pre-Christmas reasons.

Because on Sunday the first major special vaccination campaign for children from five to eleven years of age started.

The atmosphere was great and there was great interest in protecting the next generation, but many of them were also a little afraid of meeting lateral thinkers on site.

"You never know," emphasized the deputy head of the Freising vaccination center, Hubert Böck, regarding possible counter-movements in such a vaccination campaign.

Therefore, the appointment was not officially advertised, but took place via registration of parents and appointments via e-mail.

What Böck was very happy about, however, was that there was great interest, because around 330 children were registered for their first vaccination on Sunday.

The children's vaccine was inoculated by Biontech / Pfizer; ten single doses can be drawn from each ampoule.

In December, Böck explained, there will be two more vaccination appointments for five to eleven year olds, from January there will be two appointments per week - also to be able to organize the second vaccinations.

What was very positive on Sunday: Many parents wanted to be vaccinated right away.

However, this was not possible on that day due to the use of the children's vaccine at the vaccination center.

The adults were therefore immediately sent to the Gute Änger secondary school for a booster vaccination campaign for teachers and educators, which was running at the same time.

And how did the children fare with the first prick in the upper arm?

Sebastian from Dietersheim, for example, found it “not bad at all”.

“I want the numbers to go down,” said the nine-year-old who had chosen a cuddly elephant from the gift box after the vaccination.

With the cuddly toys, which were sponsored by the district office, the children should be a little distracted from the syringe.

And if you are a little scared, the nurse will tell you a joke, says Hubert Böck.

For Sebastian's mom Heike Krauss, vaccination is not a topic of discussion: Her whole family and the older son have long been vaccinated, the adults have already been boosted.

"The children wanted to be vaccinated, there was no compulsion," emphasized the mother.

Eva Zimmerhof's two sons were also extremely brave.

Vincent (9) and Julius (10) agreed: "We don't want to get infected." After the medical education for parents and children by one of the three pediatricians present, Vincent and Julius took a seat one after the other on the chair of the registered nurse Carmen Hagel .

She was very empathetic to the children and carried out the vaccination with great sensitivity, so that the boys hardly noticed the sting themselves.

Even in Eva Zimmerhof's family, everyone has long been vaccinated and refreshed.

"I just don't want a Long Covid for my children," emphasized the mother of two.

Of course, the two boys were also allowed to choose a cuddly toy.

There were also gummy bears to bridge the 15-minute rest period after the prick.

Hubert Böck from the vaccination center drew a positive conclusion on Sunday: parents and children were well prepared. He could not say exactly how many children with previous illnesses presented. Nurse Carmen Hagel was extremely relieved that the campaign had gone so well and that the children were happy to be vaccinated. What Hagel noticed: Five-year-old children did not sit on her chair, the children were all older.
