According to a definition of the Mainz University Medical Center, anyone who still has symptoms for more than six months after a corona infection suffers from Long-Covid.

Mainz - According to a study by the Mainz University Hospital, around 40 percent of people infected with the coronavirus have long-covid-like symptoms - regardless of whether they knew about their infection more than six months ago or not.

One in three reports that they are not as productive as before after being infected with Sars-CoV-2, said the head of the study, Philipp Wild, in Mainz on Monday.

Other of the numerous symptoms "without a clear clinical pattern" are fatigue, smell and taste disorders, memory disorders, shortness of breath / shortness of breath and sleep disorders, joint pain and mood swings.

However, around 40 percent of people who were not infected at all also reported some similar symptoms during the pandemic, such as fatigue, insomnia, and mood swings that lasted for at least six months, Wild said.

"But it is wrong to say that there is no such thing as Long-Covid," emphasized the Scientific Director of the University Medicine.

Rather, these results showed how little specific the clinical picture is and how great the need for research is.

The chairman of the board of Unimedizin, Norbert Pfeiffer, said: "That may also be an expression of the stress situation."

According to the first study results, women are more often affected by long-covid-like symptoms than men (45.8 percent to 34.6 percent) after an infection.

The age of the infected, on the other hand, does not play a role.

The frequency of long-term symptoms is related to the number of symptoms during the infection.

"The symptoms after an infection decrease over time," said Wild.

The University Medical Center systematically examines the long-term consequences of an infection with the coronavirus in a multidisciplinary study - from the cardiovascular system to the psyche to the teeth.

The occurrence of clinical changes is examined, but also the question of which organs are still affected unnoticed.

The basis is the Gutenberg Covid-19 study with around 10,250 people between the ages of 25 and 88, of whom almost five percent were infected with the coronavirus between October 2020 and June 2021, including about 61 percent knowingly and 35 percent unknowingly.
