It was only a matter of time: On Monday, the first corona infection with the highly contagious Omicron variant was found in the Erding district - in a schoolboy.

Erding - The Korbinian-Aigner-Gymnasium in Erding is therefore switching to distance learning from now until the Christmas holidays that start at the end of this week.

According to information from our newspaper, it might not be the only case.

We are talking about further (suspected) cases from the private and school environment of the person who tested positive.

Omikron has arrived in the Erding district: the entire high school is taking distance lessons

On Monday, the headmistress Andrea Hafner informed all families about the PCR test of a student, which was not only positive, but also suggests the Omikron variant. "In order to prevent the further spread and to protect the health of all members of the school family, several classes and a considerable number of colleagues were quarantined by the health department - regardless of the vaccination status or the length of the encounter with the infected person," it says Parents letter. That also means: Quite a few high school students have to spend Christmas in isolation.

But that is not all: According to Hafner, the school management, the health department and the Ministry of Culture have decided to switch completely to distance teaching from Tuesday - like during the lockdowns. She knows that this decision is "a significant burden for many families, but the top priority at this moment is the children's health".

The teachers would now teach via MS teams or provide distance learning opportunities.

The KAG will offer emergency care for children in the fifth and sixth grade.

All upcoming rehearsals in grades five to ten will be postponed until after the Christmas break.

According to Hafner, only the exams in grades Q11 and 12 take place regularly.

However, the students are only allowed to come to the school for this time before they are then sent back home.

According to Hafner, the closure of the students is inevitable because too many teachers are affected by the quarantine.

Incidence in the county is falling

But there is also good pandemic news: The number of new corona infections is declining again: According to district office spokeswoman Nicole Tietze, there were 47 on Monday.

For comparison: A week ago there were 99 (see statistics on page 2).

Nevertheless, the incidence increased slightly over the weekend - from 236.9 to 239.8.

The health authorities are currently aware of 576 infected people, and 800 people are in quarantine - excluding the KAG students.

Home isolation now also applies to 24 students from Oberding Realschule, 21 children from St. Erhard Kindergarten in Walpertskirchen, nine from Taufkirchen Middle School, two from Herzog-Tassilo-Realschule Erding and one each from FOS Erding, Middle School Forstern and Elementary School Moosinning.

The situation at the Erding Clinic is almost unchanged: According to Tietze, ten Covid patients are being treated there, four between the ages of 50 and 77 are in the intensive care unit, two have to be artificially ventilated.

However, there is one more death to complain about.

This increases the number of Covid deaths to 152.

2500 people boosted over the weekend

In the race against the Omikron variant, there is good news: Almost 2500 people were boosted on the weekend alone, a new record in the district. The vaccination campaign on Saturday at the secondary school in Taufkirchen was also a success because almost 3000 people across the district have received the injection since Friday. The vaccination rate rises to 66.4 percent, that of those over twelve to 75.0 percent. A total of 210,748 doses have been administered to date. 91,700 of the 140,000 district citizens are fully vaccinated.

In order to make progress with child vaccinations, District Administrator Martin Bayerstorfer has turned to the Upper Bavarian District President Maria Els to get an additional vaccine for the youngest.

Tietze reports positive feedback from Munich on Friday.

That is why the BRK vaccination center is changing its line: But this year, the first five to twelve year olds are to be immunized here.
