The French Utopia 56 Association for the Assistance of Migrants announced today a complaint against the director of the French Navy in the Channel Channel and two French and British rescue officials after the drowning accident that killed 27 migrants last November.
And the French channel Monte Carlo quoted the association as saying in a statement today, according to the testimonies of survivors, relatives of the deceased and people who managed to cross on the same day, distress calls were reported to the French and English rescue services before the bodies were discovered by a fishing boat, denouncing the failure to provide any immediate assistance to the victims.
The complaint, which was submitted to the Paris Public Prosecutor, includes accusations of manslaughter and failure to provide assistance to the victims, and it targets the official in charge of the Maritime Administration of the Channel and the North Sea, Philippe Dautereau, the director of operations of the Regional Monitoring and Rescue Center, Mark Bonafos, and the director of the English Maritime Rescue, Claire Higgs.
The association hopes that the complaint will shed light on the circumstances of the sinking of this ship, expressing its regret that the investigation opened in France seems to focus mainly on the role of smugglers.
At least 27 migrants died after their boat sank off Calais, northern France, on November 24, and only two men were rescued.
