In future, the Bavarian Bloodroot liqueur may only be produced in Bavaria.
The EU Commission has included it in the register of geographically protected information.
Brussels - Only liqueur made in Bavaria from the bloodroot root may from now on be called Bavarian bloodroot.
The reason: The European Commission has included the Bavarian liqueur in the register of geographically protected information.
This means that the production of Bavarian bloodroot must take place in "all essential production steps" in the Free State of Bavaria and meet "clearly regulated criteria".
The Commission justifies its decision in a press release.

EU Commission protects Bavarian bloodroot: longstanding tradition is the reason
The Bavarian Bloodroot is mainly produced in the region of the Bavarian Forest. It is used both as a luxury food and as a medical product, according to the communication from the EU Commission. “The decision to protect the liqueur is justified, among other things, with the long tradition of the drink. There have been numerous historical records of the drink since the 17th century. "
A lot of food is protected by this EU regulation, which is supposed to guarantee quality and protect the product from counterfeiting.
Prominent examples are champagne, Parma ham or Parmesan cheese as well as Nuremberg sausage.
In the case of the products, “their unique properties associated with their geographical origin and traditional know-how” should also be emphasized.
With the award, the Bavarian Bloodroot joins a list of 255 already protected spirits.
