Hamburg's First Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD) has expressed his regret that citizens of the Hanseatic city have been "unsettled" by incorrect vaccination statistics.

At the end of last week it became known that in Hamburg, corona infections of people with unexplained vaccination status were counted among the unvaccinated for weeks (read more here).

"If there has been any uncertainty, I regret it very much," Tschentscher said now to the "Bild" newspaper.

"I assure the people of Hamburg that our recommendations are very well founded."

The process should now be clarified.

"One reason seems to be the use of different IT systems that provide different categories for the vaccination status," explained the mayor.

"In addition, the rapidly increasing number of infections could no longer be classified quickly enough." That is why the publication of the data was then stopped.

For weeks in Hamburg had apparently been operated on with far too high data on incidence values of unvaccinated people.

For the 47th calendar week, for example, the social welfare authorities gave a seven-day incidence of 24.0 per 100,000 inhabitants among vaccinated persons.

It was 898.2 among unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated persons during this period.

Journalists from “Welt” and “Süddeutscher Zeitung” had doubts about these figures.

They researched how many corona cases had their vaccination status known.

Tschentscher had stated in the period in question that up to 95 percent of new infections were due to unvaccinated people.

Now the mayor said he had "definitely not" lied to the public.

The corona measures in Hamburg did not go back to these numbers either: "We do not judge the situation on the basis of individual figures," said the SPD politician.

He had already introduced the 2G option model in Hamburg in August.
