Closing arguments are scheduled to begin Monday morning in Manhattan in the federal trial of Ghislaine Maxwell, Jeffrey Epstein's confidante.

Maxwell, 59, has pleaded not guilty to six counts, including conspiracy, sex trafficking of minors and tempting a minor to travel to engage in illegal sexual acts.

She faces up to 70 years in prison if convicted of all six counts.

  • Four women testified at Ghislaine Maxwell's trial that they were sexually abused.

    This is what they said

The prosecution's final argument will last two to three hours, they said Friday, and the summary of the rebuttal should last about 45 minutes.

Defense attorneys said his summary will not exceed that time frame.

The jury will have two days to deliberate before the court closes this Thursday and Friday for the Christmas holidays.

The jurors may return to continue deliberating the following week if necessary.

Ghislaine Maxwell Trial Testimony: 'Abuse Pyramid Scheme'

Prosecutors said during opening statements in November that Maxwell and Epstein used cash to lure underage girls into their "pyramid scheme of abuse."

Prosecutor Lara Pomerantz told jurors that in the 1990s, Maxwell sought out girls for Epstein to sexually abuse them under the guise of a massage.

Epstein, who pleaded guilty in 2008 to state prostitution charges, was indicted on federal sex trafficking charges in July 2019, but committed suicide in prison a month later.

Maxwell was arrested in 2020.

Four key witnesses testified at the trial against Ghislaine Maxwell.

They are all women who allege that Epstein sexually abused them when they were under 18 years of age.

Three of the four accusers used pseudonyms or only first names to protect their privacy.

"Jane" said on the stand that Maxwell sometimes joined in on sexualized massages.

"Kate" testified that Maxwell organized those sexual gatherings.

Carolyn testified that Maxwell once touched her breasts, hips and butt and told her that "she had a great body for Epstein and his friends."

He was 14 at the time, he said.

The fourth woman, Annie Farmer, testified that she was 16 when Maxwell massaged her bare chest at Epstein's ranch in New Mexico in 1996.

Two dozen witnesses were called throughout 10 days of testimony before the prosecution rested.

In the photos shown to the jurors, Maxwell and Epstein are seen hugging and smiling for the camera over the years, including several that show her massaging her feet.

"Its relevance is obvious given the content of the photographs," said prosecutor Alison Moe.

"The relationship between Maxwell and Epstein is critical in this case."

The defense rested this Friday

The defense rested on Friday after presenting its case over the course of two days, arguing that Maxwell is being the scapegoat for Epstein's criminal behavior and adding that it seeks to dispute the statements of the accusers.

The attorneys called Eva Andersson-Dubin to the stand, who testified that she dated Epstein on and off from 1983 to 1991. She confirmed that she and her now husband, hedge fund billionaire Glenn Dubin, remained friends with Epstein throughout the decade of 2000.

In response to questioning by the defense, Andersson-Dubin said that he had never participated in group sexual massages with one of the accusers, known as "Jane," who had previously testified that she recalled that a woman named Eva had joined group sexualized massages. with Epstein and Maxwell.

When asked on Friday if she had ever been involved in such a situation with Jane, Maxwell replied, "Absolutely not."

A prosecutor clarified in cross-examination that Eva Andersson-Dubin is not necessarily the only Eva who has interacted with Epstein, suggesting that "Jane" may have referred to someone else.

This Thursday, as part of the defense effort to undermine the testimony of the accusers, a psychologist and professor at the University of California at Irvine testified about the false memories, telling the court that people may be exposed to misinformation. about a post-fact event and have it incorporated into their memory, rendering it inaccurate.

"Even traumatic experiences can be subject to post-event suggestions that can exaggerate, distort, or change memory," said Dr. Elizabeth Loftus.

Maxwell declined to testify on Friday, telling Judge Alison Nathan when asked if he understood his rights: "Your Honor, the government has not proven your case beyond a reasonable doubt, so you do not need to testify. ".

The jury was not present.
