The governor of Puerto Rico, Pedro Pierluisi, signed a decree this Sunday that establishes that every person who is going to attend a mass activity in open or closed establishments will have to present evidence of having completed their vaccination process and also present a negative test (PCR or antigens) performed 48 hours or less before the event.

According to the press office of the governorate, the decree will enter into force this Wednesday.

The rule establishes that in any activity where there are more than 500 people, the organizers will have to coordinate with the Puerto Rico Health Department the protocol to follow to guarantee that the activity is safe for the health of the attendees.

This includes requiring the use of the mask during the entire activity and determining whether the presence of children under 5 years of age is appropriate.

Pierluisi explained in the statement that with the arrival of the omicron variant on the island and the increase in the positivity rate, it is necessary to establish measures aimed at reducing infections.

"I reiterate that I will continue to be vigilant and attentive to the statistics and recommendations to establish new measures, if necessary," he said.

The Puerto Rico Department of Health confirmed on December 13 the first positive case of the omicron variant of covid-19 in a person who had recently traveled to the state of Florida.

Pierluisi also urged anyone who has not yet been vaccinated or who has not yet administered the booster dose against covid-19 to do so.

For several weeks the island began to vaccinate children under 5 years of age and over, and to administer the booster dose for adults.

Currently, the use of masks indoors is still mandatory and in stores and restaurants proof of vaccination is required to enter.

Those venues that do not require this test have to limit the capacity to 50% of their capacity.

According to figures from the Department of Health, as of Sunday 79.3% of the population eligible to be vaccinated against covid-19 has completed the scheme.

This represents just over 2.4 million people.
