After being suspected of serious bribery and money laundering offenses, the former minister is expected to plead guilty to tax offenses and resign from the Knesset

Shas chairman Aryeh Deri is expected to admit as part of a plea deal in committing tax offenses and will resign from the Knesset, it was reported tonight (Monday) in News 12.

According to the report, the former interior minister's resignation from the Knesset will allow him to run in the next election.

This is because the resignation will eliminate the need to discuss the stigma of offenses.

It was also reported that the drafting of the tax offenses would be softened and MK Deri would not want a prison sentence or community service. The deal is expected to close in the coming days.

The plea deal may allow Deri to serve as a minister in the future.

In the event that in the coming years Shas becomes part of the coalition and the government and Deri requests to be appointed minister, a petition is expected in the High Court against the appointment.

Without disgrace, the High Court may approve the appointment.

Earlier this month, the tapes of the Attorney General, Dr. Avichai Mandelblit, were published in News 12. In the tapes, Mandelblit was heard complaining about the investigation files transferred to the Israel Police Prosecutor's Office, from which "nothing came up" and calling them "mice."

"The Deri case came to me as a very serious corruption case, an investigation of issues and things as if it looked wow, big, yes? Not even a mouse was born from this case, I mean nothing," Mandelblit said on the tape.

The counsel added that the investigation brought up other things, such as tax offenses.

As you may recall, in 2018, the police announced that Deri was suspected of a number of serious offenses, including money laundering, bribery, breach of trust, perjury and tax offenses.

The undercover investigation into the affair began as early as 2015.
