Maltese Roberta Metsola may soon be the third woman elected to lead the European Parliament, after Simone Veil and Nicole Fontaine.
His chances of winning the election scheduled for Strasbourg on January 18 have, in any case, greatly increased since the Italian Social Democrat David Sassoli, current incumbent, announced that he would not be a candidate for re-election.
If she is unknown in France, Roberta Metsola is a heavyweight of the EPP - the European right - and of the Strasbourg Parliament of which she is vice-president.

She is only 42 years old.
It would also be the first time that a "small" EU country, in this case Malta, has landed such a post.
