The Russian Foreign Ministry announced the expulsion of two German diplomats in response to Berlin's expulsion of two Russian diplomats.
The RIA Novosti news agency quoted the Foreign Ministry as saying in a statement today that it had summoned the German ambassador to Moscow, Geza Andreas von Geer, and discussed with him the issue of the expulsion of Russian diplomats from Germany, and informed him that two of his diplomatic staff were not wanted on Russian territory in a similar response to the unfriendly decision taken by the government. German.
In its statement, the ministry added that it was emphasized that the Russian side would always respond appropriately and proportionately to any possible confrontational attacks by Berlin in the future.
The spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, had recently confirmed that Russia would not leave the issue of expelling two of its diplomats from Berlin without an appropriate response.
It is noteworthy that last week, German Foreign Minister Annalina Birbock considered two employees of the Russian embassy in Berlin persona non grata, after a Russian citizen was sentenced to life in prison for the assassination of a former Chechen field commander in Berlin in 2019.
