North Rhine-Westphalia's Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU) currently sees no legal basis for a nationwide corona lockdown in Germany as in the Netherlands.

Area-wide closings of shops, restaurants, pubs or similarly large cuts are “not possible due to the current legal situation,” Wüst told the German Press Agency on Monday.

Düsseldorf - “The new majority in the Bundestag decided that.

"If it were to force the pandemic situation, then the Bundestag would have to change that again," said Wüst.

The CDU politician was referring to the epidemic situation of national importance, which the red-yellow-green majority in the Bundestag had allowed to expire at the end of November.

This state of emergency gave the federal states the opportunity to take far-reaching corona measures by means of a simple ordinance.

"All levels of government need the necessary means to protect people," demanded Wüst.

In view of the rapid spread of the Omikron variant, the NRW head of government called on the Ampel-Bundesregierung to guarantee this "if the situation worsens, as its own expert council describes".

On Tuesday, the heads of government of the countries want to discuss tightened corona restrictions with Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD).

"A Christmas party with the family will also be possible this year," said Wüst, who is currently chairman of the Prime Minister's Conference.

"But we have to reduce contacts." Omikron requires absolute vigilance.

"That's why there won't be a big party, for example on New Year's Eve or between the years." The expert council had given "a very clear vote".

Wüst called on the federal and state governments to take joint action.

"We are always strong when we act together across all levels of government."

Wüst did not want to make a determination as to whether the schools could reopen after the Christmas holidays.

“Our aim is that as many lessons can take place as is possible under the pandemic conditions,” he said.

Politicians can make their contribution if they remain consistent and reliable.

“That in turn rules out making decisions today for the time in a few weeks.” The principle is: “As much lessons as responsibly possible,” stressed Wüst.

Because the children would have suffered enough.
