What are the effects of insufficient sleep on the skin?

2021-12-20T14:13:47.569Z

Sleep has an important effect on the health and recovery of all organs. What happens more particularly to the epidermis after a bad night? We take stock with several dermatologists.

After a bad night's sleep, it's common to feel less attractive.

And for good reason, dark circles, pimples and grayish complexion are often part of the game.

Unlike sleepy days, when you look fresher and more rested.

In order to better understand what happens to the epidermis when sleep is reduced and to resist these effects, several dermatologists explain the skin's recovery process in detail.

Chronobiology of the skin

A professor in the Department of Dermatology at the School of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Wisconsin, United States, Ladan Mostaghimi specializes in skin and sleep disorders. According to her, sleep has "an important effect on health and recovery from daily stressors on every organ, including the epidermis". The sleep mechanism and the physiological changes in the skin during the night can be explained as follows: “When we sleep, there is an increase in collagen synthesis and blood flow. Skin temperature, permeability, PH, and transepidermal water loss are different during sleep and insomnia. It is the increased blood flow that helps to have a glowing complexion in the morning after a good night's sleep.

The skin works differently during the day and at night.

According to dermatologist Laurence Netter, its primary function is “to act during the day as a barrier protecting against pollution, the sun and the penetration of particles.

But at night, it regenerates because the number of cell multiplications is at its maximum.

Between midnight and four in the morning in particular, its permeability is greater, ”explains the specialist.

Sleep to be beautiful

But what happens when we sleep little or not enough? According to Ladan Mostaghimi, insomnia has both a psychological and a physical effect on health. “We look more tired, less fit and the skin looks dry, with an increase in small pimples, a grayish complexion due to the decrease in peripheral temperature during waking. There is also an increase in dark circles around the eyes. There is also a decrease in barrier functions of the skin and less recovery after physical injuries and sunburn in people deprived of sleep, ”says the expert. On the other hand, "a good night's sleep makes us look healthier, brighter eyes, better hair, fewer pimples and less dry skin," she concludes.

Lack of sleep equals accelerated aging

According to dermatologist Catherine Gaucher, the degradation of the skin linked to lack of sleep is equivalent to accelerated aging.

His advice to minimize it is to lead a healthy life in general: "When stress prevents us from sleeping, we must start by removing coffee, tea and stimulants from our diet, especially from around 2 p.m. , it varies from person to person.

Then, we must observe what prevents us from sleeping and avoid it: it can be certain types of television programs in the evening, certain music, certain conversations or readings… it is necessary to put oneself in a state conducive to sleep. ”

Laurence Netter makes the same observation.

According to her, it is possible to slow down the aging of the epidermis by adapting your beauty routine: “You should not underestimate the duration of your sleep and remove your makeup well before sleeping.

But above all, do not forget to put on cream: one during the day to protect and one at night to optimize cell multiplication and repair mechanisms. ”
