Alcohol ban instead of mulled wine stand: after the cancellation of the Christmas markets in Nuremberg, the stalls keepers on their mulled wine.

Nuremberg - Karl-Heinz Hartnagel is missing 40,000 euros due to the renewed cancellation of the Nuremberg Christmas market *

According to

nordbayern.de

, he has 2,000 liters of mulled wine that he had ordered before the decision was made and that the additional alcohol ban in the city center means that he will not get rid of it anytime soon.

He has been selling his mulled wine for 20 years on the Karolinenstrasse in Nuremberg.

Now he doesn't know how to proceed.

“Maybe pour it into the gully in front of the authorities”, the showman is annoyed.

Nuremberg: Differences in the production of mulled wine

Unlike conventional mulled wine (it has an alcohol content of over ten percent), which according to Claudia Blokesch, boss of the Nuremberg mulled wine manufacturer Vollrath, lasts “five to six years” without hesitation, the vintner's drop goes bad faster.

Nuremberg: Deficits cannot be remedied

Because the Christmas market was canceled at short notice, some of the suppliers also had to withdraw their orders. Vollrath normally gives two thirds of the mulled wine he produces to showmen. Claudia Blokesch's sister also runs a mulled wine company: the Gefa Nürnberger liqueur factory Bacchus-Keller, which produces the Rauschgoldengel mulled wine. Almost ten percent usually go to the Christmas markets nationwide. This year they weren't even delivered to markets such as Nuremberg, Fürth and Erlangen. “But many showmen kept it and won't pay until next year,” explains Blokesch.

However, demand in retail has increased.

The mulled wine brands Gefa and Vollrath are mainly represented in the region by Rewe, Edeka and Metro.

But even this cannot compensate for deficits that have arisen.

"Now we are already at the end of the season", Blokesch emphasizes to

nordbayern.de

.

And to refill the mulled wine planned for the markets, “we don't get any more bottles.” For the storage of the rest of the delivery, additional storage space is required, which in turn means additional costs.

Traditional companies are still not exposed to a threat to their existence due to their equity reserves.

But "last year we paid extremely extra," says the entrepreneur.

Nuremberg: Switching to online trading as an option?

For almost two years, many showmen have been doing badly because of the corona pandemic, and many would even give up, according to Lorenz Kalb, chairman of the South German showmen's association and operator of a booth. Normally he would now sell his Feuerzangenbowle near the Nuremberg town hall. Instead, he is now calling for faster compensation from the federal government for other Christmas stall operators.

His daughter, who runs the eggnog stand at Children's Christmas, is now selling her products online.

In financial terms, however, it is “a drop in the ocean,” says Kalb.

They were just lucky that the ingredients for their drinks had not yet been ordered.

Many other mulled wine operators also had no additional costs due to the return.

Hartnagel, however, is left sitting alone on his mulled wine, which still gives him a headache: he cannot keep it until next year.
