Opinion | RAAM absorbs, and tries to please everyone | Israel Today

2021-12-21T21:42:33.899Z

So far, RAAM has done the opposite of what it promised, especially when it comes to LGBT people, surrogacy laws and support for settlement budgeting - issues that left them in common

Whether it's about the Electricity Law and whether it's about any other law, the big confrontation in the coalition is coming, and it's a matter of time, even though what holds all its components is the fear of going to the polls.

Meanwhile, the public confrontation, which is not the first and certainly not the last, between RAAM and Ayelet Shaked, does serve both sides - on the one hand Shaked appeals to right-wing voters, especially regarding the demand for governance in the Negev, and on the other, RAAM members, and especially MKs And near Taha, they send a message to their constituents with quite a few muscles and say that they have the power to dismantle the government.

However, so far RAAM has behaved as someone who suffers from the battered woman syndrome: snatches slaps from the person who is supposed to protect her (the coalition) but refuses to tell her family (her constituents) about the insults and violence against her, and no less - tries to keep the image of the person who beat her positive. Not to get the whole neighborhood talking about it.

Mansour Abbas took a very big risk as an Arab leader in Israel, in fact his historic entry into the coalition.

But now the RAAM no longer has many options, and in the next elections the members of the Islamic movement will have to come up with results and receipts, not just promises or a coalition agreement whose entire clauses have not yet been implemented.

However, neither in the current coalition nor in any other coalition - right, left or center - can the Arab parties, and especially the Islamic movement, be an influential factor as required of an ideological party: influence, shout and shout when necessary, submit or oppose bills.

So far, RAAM has done the opposite of what it promised its voters, especially when it comes to LGBT rights, surrogacy laws and budget support for settlements.

During the election period she not only promised not to support or promote such laws, but claimed that this was the reason she decided to retire from the joint list.

But it seems that violating election promises is a cross-sectoral phenomenon in Israeli politics.

Some of the decrees that the RAAM members took upon themselves, following the entry into the coalition and its support, were to avoid public events in Arab society. It is no coincidence that GSS security was attached to Abbas' chairman. And its security guards and makes them part of the landscape at the sector's political events.

In view of the coalition's situation, and in order not to embarrass Prime Minister Bennett and his party, Knesset members from the southern faction of the Islamic Movement chose not to come - in stark contrast to most Arab leaders - to congratulate the northern faction leader, Sheikh Raed Salah, after his release.

The one who dared the people of Ram to come was MK Mazen Ghanaim, which in itself marks the lack of harmony and the lack of a uniform line in the party.

However, his arrival is more related to his intention to return to the mayoralty of Sakhnin, after losing to Hadash in 2018. More at the local level and does not have to deal with difficult votes in the Knesset.
