The controversial paragraph 219a is about to be deleted from the Criminal Code.

Federal Justice Minister Marco Buschmann (FDP) and Family Minister Anne Spiegel (Greens) announced that they would quickly initiate the abolition of the so-called advertising ban on abortions.

Buschmann told the newspapers of the Funke media group that they were aiming for a corresponding bill as early as January.

According to Buschmann, 219a means "a criminal risk"

Section 219a of the Criminal Code means “a criminal risk for doctors if, for example, they provide factual information about abortions on their homepage or on the Internet,” said Buschmann.

He thinks that is "absurd".

Many women "who are wrestling with the question of an abortion also seek advice online," said the minister.

"But it cannot be the case that precisely the doctors who are most likely to provide information there are not allowed to provide information."

The new Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Spiegel, also described the abolition of the ban on information on abortion as urgent.

"The abolition of paragraph 219a of the penal code, with which women are stigmatized and doctors are criminalized, is quickly on the agenda," said Spiegel of the "taz".

She will discuss this with Buschmann shortly.

The SPD, Greens and FDP had already agreed in the coalition agreement to delete Section 219a of the Criminal Code.

It prohibits doctors from making information about abortions publicly available.

Abolition of the transsexual law is also planned

She will also talk to Buschmann about the swift abolition of the transsexual law, said Spiegel.

"We can tackle both of these quickly." For her, issues of sexual self-determination are "a question of attitude," the minister continued.

"When people stand in front of gynecological practices that carry out abortions who unintentionally hostility to pregnant women and their doctors, a red line has been crossed for me," said Spiegel.

"I have a clear stance, I'm passionate about my issues, and I'm not prepared to compromise on my basic stance."
