Deloitte recently published the "Technology, Media, and Telecommunications Industry Forecast for 2022", listing a number of future development trends in the technology industry.
The report pointed out that in addition to 5G and wifi 6, fixed wireless access (FWA) is growing rapidly and will become a new trend of global Internet access in the future. The total number of global wireless home Internet connections may exceed 1 billion, and this technology has been applied in Hong Kong.
The survey results reflect that the proportion of executives who believe that 5G and Wi-fi 6 are the three most critical wireless technologies for their business have both increased by 7 percentage points after 3 years, to 76% and 65% respectively.
Deloitte also predicts that Wi-Fi 6 device shipments will reach 2.5 billion units in 2022, exceeding 1.5 billion 5G devices.
Global network executives tend to use Wi-Fi 6 indoors or in fixed areas, and 5G outdoors or mobile devices.
Wi-Fi 6 is mainly used in home and office internal network connections, while 5G is more commonly used in large-scale mobile devices such as smart cities, ports and airports, and "connected cars" with networked communication functions. The industry is now developing future network standards Make the two better integrate and complement each other.
In terms of devices, the report predicts that the number of fixed wireless access device (Fixed Wireless Access) connections in 2026 will increase by 2.8 times compared with 2020, and it is expected that the total number of global wireless home Internet connections may exceed 1 billion.
Fixed wireless access technology uses radio waves to set up access points on building roofs and wireless communication towers to connect to homes or offices without the need for fixed broadband networks such as cables or optical fibers.
At present, the home wireless broadband provided by many telecommunications companies in Hong Kong utilizes this technology. Users receive Internet signals through routers with phone cards inserted, without the need to pull cables so that tenants such as tenement houses and village houses can also use home broadband services.
