Weather models indicate that there will be heavy snowfall north of the low mountain range around the Christmas holidays.

White Christmas and traffic chaos are possible.

Munich - beautifully sugared forests and snow-covered house roofs at Christmas.

For many, this is part of the ideal dream of a “white Christmas”.

In large parts of Germany, however, there has been no snow on the holidays for a long time.

That could change this year.

Meteorologist Jan Schenk speaks of a "snow bomb" over Christmas.

The enthusiasm can quickly turn into displeasure when the fun in the snow causes traffic chaos.

A so-called countercurrent situation brings the snow to northern Germany.

Weather forecast: In some places 20 centimeters of fresh snow

In a countercurrent situation, cold and warm air meet directly and the wind turns by up to 180 degrees.

Such a special weather situation can bring a lot of snow with it.

The focus on Christmas Day will be around Hamburg, on the second it will probably move a little further south, between the Münsterland and Dresden.

Up to 20 centimeters of fresh snow and snow drifts are possible here.

It can be dangerous on the southern flank of the snowfall.

Freezing rain can cause black ice to form here.

Even further south, for example in Munich, things look bad with a white Christmas.

Here it stays green or better said: gray.

In the mountains and in parts of Swabia, however, one or the other snowflake can occur.

Weather: Snow and ice can sometimes cause traffic chaos

Fresh snow and black ice can also wreak havoc on the streets over the holidays.

In particular, the major motorways A2, A7 and A9 can be affected by traffic obstructions.

After the Christmas holidays, there is no end to snow and ice, on the contrary: The snow cover will continue to expand to the south.

Most climate models predict a cold January - so the snow would remain for a few days or weeks.
