Insane corona rules on Mallorca - but the number of infections continues to rise

In Spain, too, fear of the omicron variant is omnipresent.

The German vacation paradise Mallorca relies on some strange regulations.

Palma / Munich - Belgium, Germany or the Netherlands - all over Europe, the measures in the fight against the coronavirus and its Omikron variant are currently being tightened.

The Spanish government has meanwhile agreed on a milder approach: more vaccinations, more medical staff and a mask requirement, even outdoors, should help contain the pandemic.

On the popular holiday island of Mallorca, on the other hand, they rely on modified regulations that are intended to keep the local tourism business alive.

At the same time, the number of infections continues to rise.

Corona in Mallorca: Dancing only with a mask, smoking is partially prohibited

The 3G rule applies in all restaurants and accommodations, the EU Covid certificate is a generally valid admission ticket, as in Germany. Anyone who has not been vaccinated or tested must be tested beforehand at their own expense. The 3G rule even applies in the popular clubs and discos, there is even a mask requirement on the dance floors and curfew at 5 a.m. No less curious is the requirement to wear a mask outdoors, but it only takes effect if there is no distance of at least 1.5 meters to people outside your own household.

Bath towels from other households must be at least two meters apart on the beaches.

Even holidaymakers who smoke have to be prepared for absurd conditions on Mallorca: Smoking is allowed while standing, but not while walking.

In addition, a distance of 1.5 meters to other people must be maintained at all times.

Corona chaos in Spain: Strict measures only in Catalonia

The question of the effectiveness of the strange measures is superfluous if you take a look at the current number of infections on the island.

The seven-day incidence in the Balearic Islands is 318, in all of Spain the value on Tuesday yesterday was 424. At the same time, 631 new corona cases were reported in Mallorca, the previous day there were 546. Spain has almost 80 percent a good vaccination rate.

As already mentioned, the Spanish government is not taking tougher measures for the time being.

The Catalonia region had campaigned for night exit restrictions in the past few days, but was unable to enforce them in Madrid.

The region with the tourist metropolis of Barcelona announced on Tuesday, among other things, the closure of clubs, bars and discos as well as restrictions on going out from 1:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. and limiting the occupancy of restaurants, cultural and leisure facilities.

These measures are to come into force on Friday for an initial 15 days.
