Recreational vehicles have become a fairly common expression in the last decade.

Every front-wheel drive platform, which has undergone a slight elevation, a bit of camouflage plastic and as if a designed awning - boasts that name.

But what is a recreational vehicle really?

In the Canadian Kan-Am definition, a family recreational vehicle is what appears in the image at the top of the page.

A vehicle designed for the terrain, offers relative comfort for four passengers, allows carrying equipment on the roof and in the trunk and is also ready to tackle any obstacle in the terrain.

Not exactly a Hyundai Tucson or Kia Sportage let’s say…

The first Commander was introduced a decade ago and was supposed to be Cam-Am’s answer to the wave of sporty SUVs that had just begun.

In retrospect he fulfilled his role for a very short time as the Maverick series that was introduced after giving a more convincing answer and even went on to become an officer.

The senior Maverick models today, offer an imaginary off-road capability, with a powerful turbo engine, a tremendous suspension move and the ability to maintain a very high pace in any type of route.

Their price, before additions, is approaching a quarter of a million shekels.

Indeed, the arms competition in the senior category of these SUVs, has already crossed every major.

And instead the new commander is supposed to offer something sane and more comfortable.

Still display good capability but also be cheaper to purchase and less extreme on the trail.

The way there is a completely new chassis, with the option of a short model with 2 seats or a long one with four seats.

The body itself is wider than the previous generation so that the space is improved and the upper part of the chassis is modular and suitable for installing various original additions - from carriers and awnings to closing to the opening rear box.

On the path

At the local launch we had the opportunity to demonstrate the ability of the new Commander on the trails north of the Judean Desert. From the moment of entry, the poet's intention is completely clear. The entrance is quite easy, the operation of the doors is convenient and so is the operation of the direction of the chair - easy and smooth operation compared to the offer in this genre. The fact that there are regular belts here and not race harnesses, also tells about the purpose of this vehicle. With such belts, it is easy to stop, get off the vessel, and return. An action that is suitable for a trip and not so convenient in the more extreme easy.

The mechanical specifications here are quite simple.

The suspensions have a length of 38 cm, in the dampers only a spring load can be adjusted.

Atmospheric engine with 100 hp, fairly basic specifications.

When it comes to propulsion, however, there is everything you need to overcome obstacles in the field.

Option to choose between dual and rear propulsion, electrically locked rear differential and viscose front.

Needless to say, throughout the ride, this vehicle has passed over the track, including technical ascents, with rear-wheel drive only and a lot of contempt.

Only really difficult challenges will be required to propel all four said tires and locks.

The Bottom Line

The wonderful Israeli terrain, especially in the weather we are experiencing now, is a nod to our day-to-day road hardships.

The Commander is an interesting offer for those who want to create a new family leisure experience.

One that gives a whole new meaning to the trial - let's jump into the mall.
