Successful Peruvian model disappears due to presidential instability, says analyst 3:00
(CNN Spanish) -
Carlos Gallardo, Peru's Minister of Education, was censored this Tuesday by the plenary session of the Congress of the Republic.
The motion that proposed censure was approved with 70 votes in favor, 38 against and 3 abstentions.
According to the regulations of the Peruvian Congress, Gallardo must resign from office and President Pedro Castillo accept his resignation.
And in the coming days, the president must appoint his replacement.
Gallardo was harshly criticized by opposition parliamentarians for his political activity linked, according to the approved motion of censure, to extreme left groups, in addition to allegedly having leaked responses to teacher evaluation tests.
The document affirms that the suitability of Gallardo for the position "is more than questioned because he has had a political activity linked to radical groups such as Patria Roja", he has belonged to the National Federation of Workers in Education of Peru - considered close to the terrorist organization Sendero Luminoso— and “participated in events with members of Movadef,” Sendero's political arm.
The motion of censure also states that "irregularities have been found in the development of the Single National Test of the 2021 Appointment Contest that would serve to determine the entry of teachers to the Public Teaching Career."
According to the legislators, these irregularities would consist of the "diffusion or filtration of the questions and the solution".
Gallardo had refused to resign his position as Minister of Education.
In a press conference this Monday, in relation to the accusation of having leaked the exams, he said: "I do not believe it is fair to assume a guilt that I do not have."
In statements to the press, Gallardo also said he did not belong to Patria Roja and denied being a leader of the National Federation of Education Workers.
