In June, Olaf Scholz wants to welcome the heads of state of the western economic powers in the Alps.

It is becoming apparent that the second G7 summit in Elmau will not only be more expensive than the premiere in 2015.

Munich / Elmau - The deployment of police and security forces to re-host the G7 summit at Schloss Elmau in June 2022 is likely to cost more than 166 million euros.

This emerges from a calculation by the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior, which is available to the German Press Agency in Munich.

Bavaria's Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) also sees a new risk situation for the meeting of the leading western economic powers in the Bavarian Alps.

The last G7 summit under the German presidency took place in 2015 in the luxury hotel not far from Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Now the meeting will take place there from June 26th to 28th under the leadership of Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD).

Approval in a meeting scheduled at short notice

"According to the current state of knowledge and a situation that is still completely unclear at the moment, total costs (...) for the protection (...) of roughly EUR 166.1 million are to be expected," says Herrmann in a letter to the Budget committee of the state parliament. Since the expenditure in the state budget could not be taken into account due to the short-term planning, the budget committee had to approve the release of the money on Wednesday in a meeting scheduled at short notice.

When asked by the dpa, Herrmann himself emphasized that the cost calculation was not yet certain, "but we will probably move somewhere of this magnitude".

Further: “At first glance that is a lot of money, but we also want to be a good host again and a guarantee for a safe event.

The most important thing is that the whole thing is peaceful again. "

New threat level expected

According to Herrmann, a new threat situation must be assumed when planning the security concept: “This time we are in a situation where right-wing extremists could demonstrate alongside the left-wing extremists.

The G7, also the G20 in Hamburg, has always been a topic of left-wing extremism, the left-wing autonomists.

At the moment we may have to reckon with actions from the right-wing extremist side. "

In contrast to the G7 premiere in Elmau in 2015, the conference location does not have to be completely redesigned this time, said Herrmann.

At that time, among other things, new roads were built.

“It has not yet been finally clarified what will be necessary in the end.” The federal government also has to say how it specifically envisages the conference process.

Regardless of the open details, it is already clear that the summit is likely to be significantly more expensive than the premiere in 2015. At that time, around 135 million euros were posted.

Largest item of rents and leases

Around 147 million euros are earmarked for the police in the new calculation; in 2015 around 20,000 police officers were on duty.

The largest items here, at around 52 million euros, are rents and leases for land, buildings, rooms, machines and equipment, as well as 30 million euros for reimbursements to the federal government and other federal states for the use of non-Bavarian police forces.

30 million euros are also due for the purchase of security equipment, including security fences and five so-called SatCom systems for satellite-supported communication systems.

A little more than 11 million euros are earmarked for fire and disaster control and rescue services, and 386,000 for the protection of the constitution.

It is still unclear what proportion of this the federal government will take over.

This has yet to be negotiated.

In January Germany will take over the presidency of the “Group of Seven”, which also includes the USA, France, Great Britain, Italy, Japan and Canada.

The European Union also takes part in the summits.

For the first time, Scholz will host such an important international meeting.

The G7 summits have not met in big cities for 20 years.

For the penultimate summit, the federal government had chosen the Ostseebad Heiligendamm.
