During the past 24 hours, Spain recorded a record number of infections with the Corona virus, which amounted to 49,823 cases, at a time when the mutant Omicron represents nearly half of the new cases.
According to the Spanish Ministry of Health, the previous record was about 40,000 injuries within 24 hours, and was recorded in mid-January in the country, which is considered one of the countries most affected by the first wave of the Corona pandemic.
Omicron represents 47.2 percent of the new cases diagnosed between December 6 and 12, and this mutant is in the process of overtaking the delta mutant, according to the latest preliminary data.
This brings the total number of infections in Spain since the outbreak of the epidemic to 558,045, including 88,788 deaths.
Today, the Spanish government is holding an extraordinary meeting with regional officials to consider additional measures to confront the new wave of infections in Omicron, while Catalonia, one of the most populous regions in the country, announced that it will seek permission from the courts to implement new restrictions, including imposing a night curfew.
