A Thousand Times: Open a box and find $ 180,000 in cash | Israel Today

A professor of physics at City College New York came to his office and discovered a box that had lain there for nine months.

When the professor at City College in New York decided to sort his mail after long months in which he was not in the office due to the corona plague, he could not believe his eyes.

Inside a small box he found $ 180,000 in cash, in $ 50 and $ 100 bills, with an explanation - that these were funds intended for needy students.

The box was shipped in November 2020, long after the institution moved to distance learning.

Everything you need for winter on sale

Prof. Winod Manon, chairman of the Department of Physics, initially thought the closed box was some kind of souvenir sent by a former student, but who opened it on September 1, at the beginning of this semester, he discovered thousands of dollars in small bills. "I have never seen anything like it. Movies. I was shocked and just did not know how to respond, "he told CNN yesterday (Wednesday). Doing so - the reason is simple: the educational opportunity I was given gave me the foundation to continue to evolve. I had a scientific, productive, and very rewarding career. "

At the City College of New York, the science department received an anonymous package.

Manon noted that he worked in the lab regularly during the plague, but not for the scientific building where he ran, so he did not open the box.

The letter asked Manon to use the money to help students who need financial support to continue their studies.

Police were involved in the photo, to check if it was money coming from criminal activity, and on December 13 it was decided that the gift was legal and the gift could be accepted.

The money will now be used for two full tuition scholarships each year - for an entire decade.

But that does not end the mystery, because the unique amount of money raises a weighty question: Is the donor a Jew?

In Judaism it is customary to donate money in multiples of 18, since this is the equivalent in gematria to the word "living" - a virtue for luck and health.

For this reason, American Jewry has been intensely involved in the unique story since it was published in the New York Times and other media.

The Jewish News Agency JTA wondered if he was a Jewish graduate, since for much of the 20th century City College was a magnet for the city's Jews and was even called "Jewish Harvard", partly because until the 1960s many Jews were not allowed to attend elite private universities.

The fact that the donor said he had long ago graduated could indicate that the same student was a Jew who was given the opportunity to study at City College and could not attend a private university, and therefore asked in his anonymous donation to give back to students who are unable to self-fund.
