Today, the Chinese authorities began applying strict closure measures to the 13 million residents of Xi'an due to the resurgence of the Corona epidemic.

According to Chinese media, after discovering a hundred injuries in the city, its residents were forced to stay in their homes “unless there is a compelling reason”, as only one person from each family is allowed to go out for shopping every two days.

It also closed all non-essential businesses and residents can no longer leave the city without permission and all residents will be tested for Corona.

This measure comes a month and a half before the opening of the Winter Olympics on the 4th of next February, when China is adopting a (zero Covid) strategy, which includes doing everything possible to reduce new infections as much as possible.

In addition, the Omicron mutant continues to spread rapidly in a number of countries, as Britain recorded 106,000 new infections during yesterday alone.

The country, which is among the worst-affected countries in the world, with more than 147,500 deaths recorded, is trying to speed up the vaccination campaign, and nearly one million booster doses are given every day.

Yesterday, Spain recorded a record daily toll of more than 60,000 injuries.

In the face of this outbreak, the government made it mandatory to wear masks outside, starting from Christmas.

In Sweden, new measures come into force today with the imposition of remote work and the presentation of a vaccination certificate to participate in public events that bring together more than 500 people.

For its part, Greece announced today that the wearing of masks will be mandatory at home and abroad during the holiday season, in an attempt to contain the spread of the epidemic.

"Omicron has become dominant in many countries, including Denmark, Portugal and the United Kingdom, where numbers are doubling, leading to unprecedented transmission rates," said Dr Hans Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe.

In the United States, the annual Oscars of Honor ceremony in Los Angeles, scheduled for next month, will be postponed due to the threat posed by Omicron.

Omicron is now the largely dominant mutant in the United States, accounting for 73 percent of new coronavirus infections.

These developments come as the head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, warned of the illusion that giving booster doses of vaccines is sufficient to overcome the epidemic.

He stressed that "random booster doses campaigns may prolong the epidemic instead of eliminating it, by acquiring the available doses by countries that already have high vaccination rates, which gives the virus more possibilities for spreading and mutating."
