On the eve of Christmas Eve, the government calls for the responsibility of the French as the country faces the threat of the Omicron surge, the latest variant of the Covid-19 epidemic.

Prime Minister Jean Castex had already asked town halls last Friday to give up New Year's festivities, in particular concerts and fireworks, and announced that alcohol consumption would be prohibited on public roads.

The fifth wave, which even preceded the arrival of Omicron, continues to swell, with 84,272 new cases of Covid-19 confirmed on Wednesday and 16,118 people currently hospitalized, including 3,147 in critical care services, according to Public Health France.

The toll since the start of the epidemic now exceeds 122,000 deaths in France.
