Despite the dangers due to the rapidly spreading Corona virus variant Omikron, cultural and sporting events in Berlin are initially allowed with spectators.

However, the permissible upper limits for the number of participants will be corrected downwards.

The governing mayor Franziska Giffey (SPD) announced on Thursday after a Senate meeting.

Berlin - Accordingly, from December 28th, events outdoors are only permitted with up to 3000 people and in closed rooms with up to 2000 people.

The prerequisite is a general hygiene concept specified by the authorities, which provides for at least mechanical ventilation in closed rooms.

In addition, such events must generally take place according to 2G-plus rules: They are only open to vaccinated and convalescent people who also have to show a current negative corona test.

Wearing an FFP2 mask is also compulsory.

For all other events, the same applies as before: outdoors they are prohibited with more than 1000 people present at the same time, indoors with more than 200 people present at the same time.

The 2G regulation continues to apply here.

"We have decided to proceed in a measured manner, weighing up the risks and protective measures," said Giffey.

The aim is to maintain activities in culture, sport or business as far as possible, albeit under restricted conditions.

"We have come to the conclusion that this is still better than a complete cancellation." The federal and state governments agreed on Tuesday that "major national events" must take place without spectators from December 28th at the latest.

However, it has not been defined what exactly falls under this term.
