Freezing rain hit parts of Bavaria on the evening before December 24th - there was a pile-up on the A6.
Drivers must continue to be on their guard.
Amberg / Regensburg - The German Meteorological Service had already warned about slippery conditions in Bavaria on Thursday afternoon - the warning to all motorists was to come true hours later: In several places in the Free State there were ice-related accidents.
The A6 near Amberg in the Upper Palatinate was particularly hard hit.
Amberg / Upper Palatinate: pile-ups in freezing rain on the A6
There was a pile-up there on Thursday evening, as a spokesman for the Upper Palatinate police headquarters
confirmed
at the request of
Merkur.de
.
Around 50 cars were involved, and there were also several injured.
The cause of the accident was apparently the weather conditions: Freezing rain had come down around Amberg, the police said.
More than 60 ice accidents in the entire Upper Palatinate have been registered.
The ADAC reported a blockage of the A6 between the junctions Amberg-Süd and Amberg-Ost in both directions.
The section of the motorway will remain impassable until at least midnight.
Bavaria affected by ice: black ice on Christmas Eve in Upper Bavaria and Upper Palatinate
Another accident in the Upper Palatinate, on the other hand, seems more harmless: In Regensburg, a bus driver lost control of his vehicle on a slippery road surface and touched several parked cars, as reported by the
Mittelbayerische Zeitung
,
among others
.
According to the newspaper, the Regensburg police were in constant use on the evening before December 24th due to the slipperiness.
There were of course problems in other parts of the country: In Schleswig-Holstein, the police registered 150 accidents by early evening - due to persistent snowfall.
In Bavaria there will probably be no snow over the Christmas period.
Nevertheless, this is not a reason to give the all-clear for drivers.
For some parts of the Free State, the DWD warns of slipperiness beyond the night.
So there could be black ice in the eastern Upper Palatinate until the morning of Christmas Eve.
The meteorologists expect freezing rain or drizzle there.
The same applies to the north-east of Upper Bavaria: In parts of the districts of Rosenheim, Traunstein, Mühldorf, Altötting and Erding, "ice build-up on lanes, sidewalks and objects" is to be expected, as it was said.
