Should the former US President Donald Trump run for a term again, that would also encourage incumbent President Joe Biden to run for office.
In an interview with ABC television on Wednesday evening (local time), 79-year-old Biden said that if his rival Trump entered the presidential race, "the chances of my running would increase".
Previously, the Democrat had been cautious about the question of running again in the elections in more than three years: "If I have the health that I have now (...) then I will run again."
When asked whether a duel with 75-year-old Republican Trump would influence his decision, he replied with a smile: "You are trying to tempt me."
Trump has not yet made any concrete plans public.
But he is the clear favorite for a new nomination for his party - despite all scandals, affairs and untruths.
Vice Harris is struggling with problems
Trump continues to claim that the 2020 presidential election, in which he ran against Joe Biden, were "fraudulent" and that his election victory was "stolen".
The man, whose supporters attacked the Capitol on January 6 to prevent his rival's victory from being authenticated, had hinted in recent months that he might run for another term.
While Biden's Vice President Kamala Harris was initially seen as a natural heir, rumors recently circulated in Washington about her troubled relationship with the President and about her political future.
Harris, 57, appears to be struggling to find her place in the White House.
She is also entrusted with particularly sensitive tasks, including the migration crisis on the border with Mexico.
