The number of corona infections in Europe is increasing rapidly because of Omikron - the federal government is now also classifying Portugal and Spain as high-risk areas. A neighbor of Germany, however, is no longer on the list.

Because of the rapidly spreading omicron variant and the rapidly increasing number of infections, other countries are on the list of high-risk areas.

The federal government will now classify Spain and Portugal as high-risk areas from Saturday.

The USA, Finland, Monaco and Cyprus also make the list.

Austria, Malaysia, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, on the other hand, will be removed from the corresponding risk list, according to the Robert Koch Institute.

Unvaccinated people who enter Germany from high-risk areas have to be in quarantine for ten days, but can test themselves after five days.

Children under the age of twelve must be quarantined for five days.

Vaccinated and convalescent people have to register their entry digitally.

The classification as a high-risk area is automatically accompanied by a travel warning from the Federal Foreign Office.

It makes it easier for tourists to cancel trips that have already been booked free of charge, but does not mean a travel ban.

Countries and regions with a particularly high risk of infection are classified as high-risk areas.

The number of infections is not the only criterion;

The rate at which the virus spreads, the burden on the health system or a lack of data on the coronavirus situation are also included in the assessment.

More than 50 states on the high-risk list

In the meantime, there were no corona high-risk areas in the European Union in late summer.

With the exception of Austria and Luxembourg, all of Germany's neighboring countries are now classified as high-risk areas.

In total, more than 50 countries are classified as high-risk areas in whole or in part.

There are also eight virus variant areas in Africa, for which even stricter entry restrictions apply.

Great Britain is also the only country outside Africa that has been classified as a virus variant area for three days now.

The countries are classified in the highest risk category because of the prevalence of the Omikron variant.
