In his renewed candidacy for the office of Federal President Steinmeier can count not only on the Social Democrats, but also on the FDP.
The Greens have not yet declared themselves publicly.
Berlin - For Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the chances of a second term in office have increased.
The FDP agreed on Wednesday evening to support the renewed candidacy of the SPD politician.
Steinmeier's announcement that he would run again was welcomed by the Social Democrats anyway.
The big question now is how the Greens behave: Do they support Steinmeier's candidacy or send someone into the race for the highest state office - and snub Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) with it.
In the election in the Federal Assembly on February 13, the SPD, Greens and FDP together have a majority.
Should the Greens prevent Steinmeier's election, that would mean an abrupt end to the red-green-yellow harmony in the newly sworn federal government.
Steinmeier publicly announced his application in May and said: "I would like to accompany our country on its way into the future, a future after the pandemic, a future after Corona."
FDP supports Steinmeier
The FDP also justified its support for the Social Democrats with his appearance in the pandemic.
Federal party leader Christian Lindner paid tribute to his services on Wednesday: "Mr. Steinmeier is an outstanding personality and in times of social polarization has made a contribution to the cohesion in our country."
The chairman of the FDP parliamentary group, Christian Dürr, said that especially in times of crisis, a federal president should have a reconciling effect and integrate.
"During the corona pandemic, Frank-Walter Steinmeier sought dialogue with the citizens.
He has ensured continuity and I am sure that he will reliably guide the country through this crisis in his second term as well. "

The Federal Assembly consists of the 736 members of the Bundestag and the same number of delegates sent by the state parliaments - together there are 1472 members.
According to the Basic Law, the votes of the majority of the members of the Federal Assembly are required in the first two ballots, i.e. at least 736 plus one vote.
In a third ballot, a simple majority would be enough.
